the top five female artists of the 80sLast week, I decided that Fridays were a fun day to list Five of my favorite things. Well, it was that and the fact that Five, Friday and Favorite all start with F… very neat and orderly. I like neat and orderly on my site. Because neat and orderly my house ain’t.

Anyhooooo… I started with a REALLY hard challenge of Five 80’s songs and I realized that there have to be categories of the favorites because there are just too many good ones and I’ll never name them all. So, this Friday, I give you the ladies!! Guess that means this is a Five Female Favorites on Friday! OMG! FOUR F’s!

Again.. in no particular order and with a brief commentary by moi… Enjoy you morning MTV flashback, friends! (More F’s!!!)

Donna Summer – She Works Hard for the Money

I’m so glad Donna made it for the first few years in the 80’s because girl could rock a ballad. And could it be that she is the one who started the dancing in the streets phenomenon that rocked all 80’s videos?? I think it’s a possibility…

Pat Benatar – Love is a Battlefield

And speaking of street dancing scenes… this one was Thriller before Thriller was Thriller. Nothing is more terrifying than a bunch of call-dancers dance attacking their John. But we’re not talking about the video, we’re talking about the song. This was the HELL YEAH song of the 80’s that had all of us girls shimmying across the gym floor at the 8th grade dance.

Joan Jett – I Love Rock and Roll

Similar -   The Life of the Wife of a Pilot

Are y’all awake yet? Joan Jett brings us another “f” word with this song.. F*@k Yeah!!! I mean come on.. who else can rock leather, a mullet and hitting on a 17 year old better than Joan Jett? Honestly, I love all of her music, but if you can hear this song on the radio and not crank it up and sing at the top of your lungs, you’re not right.

Cyndi Lauper – Girls Just Wanna Have Fun

I think this was THE battle cry for every teen girl in the 80’s. The only thing that I hate is that it has been bastardized throughout the years but I still have so many great memories of this song, this album, this artist and this fashion phenomenon known as Cyndi Lauper. And while there’s no “street” group dancing, there IS “inside the house” group dancing. It counts.

Madonna – Crazy For You

Ugh! This one was SO hard. How do you choose your favorite Lady M song of the 80’s?? I couldn’t go with the early ones where they sped up the tracks and made her voice so high-pitched. I really think this is THE song that was her true breakout song. It was HER. It was her deep, soulful voice and this was such a great song. Every time I hear this song, I think of three things… Jamie, The Depot and Jennell. And then there was the whole Vision Quest thing…
